I’ve been rewatching season 3 lately (I LOVE this season). I understand that these are fictional characters of course and that nothing was going to happen between Booth and Brennan until the network gave Hart Hanson the green light, but from a story telling point of view, it is my opinion that Booth and Brennan were almost ready for a relationship during this season. This was one of their dating season. They spent all their time together. Booth supported Brennan throughout all her family ordeal with her dad and brother. They got to know a lot more of each other and had a lot of very meaningful conversations about making love, babies, the future, her worth as more than just a shallow pretty face (Brainy smurf) and on top of that, we even got to see them kiss. Once again, in my opinion they were both already deep in love with one another but were too afraid to act on it. Whatever forward momentum they had gained over the course of the season, the traumatic events that transpired by the end set them back. Brennan experienced the betrayal of someone close to her when Zach was revealed as the Gormogon apprentice but more than that, the strong emotions that she felt when Booth died scared the living daylights out of her. I believe Brennan was already in love with Booth and the pain she felt when she thought she had lost him, that was a pain she didn’t want to experience ever again, forcing her to put up those giant walls once again.
